Question: What is ADSL?

ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) is a special telephone line installed by Telkom.

Because the line is digital, high speeds (several megabit per second) are possible.

To use ADSL you need:

1. ADSL line (provided by Telkom)

2. ADSL router (hardware "box" - for sale at most computer stores or provided by Telkom)

3. ADSL access account (provided by Mediahouse)

4. Computer

To use an ADSL connection to the internet a ADSL router is connected to the ADSL (telephone) line and your computer connects to the router - either via a network cable or via WiFi (radio/wireless).

You set the router's ADSL account name and a password (which you get from us), and the router connects your computer to the internet.

You can use your ADSL line to make (and receive) normal phone calls, and these are charged at normal rates,  but you pay a flat fee for internet access per month. Contact Telkom to get an ADSL line installed.

Mediahouse only supplies "Uncapped" accounts Uncapped accounts have no time or other restrictions, but "fair use" policies are implemented.  We do not allow the 20% of the heaviest users to "crowd out" the rest of the 80% of the "normal" users, in other words we make sure everyone gets fair access to the network by slowing very heavy users down - but only for as long as they are crowding out the rest of us.

The following uncapped accounts are available from Mediahouse

Question: How do the costs work?

There are two portions to the cost of an ADSL connection:

the first is a line rental payable to Telkom and depends on line speed.  See the Telkom site for more info...

the second is an internet access account payable to Mediahouse.

A very popular home option at the moment is a 1Meg Line. With this line and a wireless router various people around the house can connect wirelessly to a router and all experience high speed internet access with no limitations. There is no cap so you can all dowload as much as you want. Assuming you already have a an ADSL line at home this setup would cost you:

Telkom 1024kb/s rental -         R289 monthly

Mediahouse 1Meg line access R460 monthly

TOTAL                                  R749 monthly

Remember the speed of your Telkom Line must match the speed of your Internet Access!
